Watch straps are not something I often review at WRUK. This is because most of my watches are on bracelets. Good straps can make all the difference between a good and great watch. Artem offered me a free strap in exchange. Although watches are often returned to reviewers after a review, straps are kept for hygiene reasons.
First, the ordering process was amazing. The widths available are 20mm to 22mm, including rare 21mm lug width. You can also choose from a variety of stitching colours, such as red, white or grey. Henry Ford said that the straps can be any colour as long as they are black. It's so far so good. But you can also choose from three lengths (XS to Standard, XL and a springbar)! Quick release was the choice I made for my strap. However, standard spring bars are also available if you wish. For more expensive watches, you can get "fat" bars.
In just a few days, the straps were delivered by courier from Adelaide. The cardboard packaging was a nice touch (not many straps come with unrecyclable plastic bags), but it was difficult to remove the straps without damaging the box. The straps were very easy to handle. The straps had just enough flex to hold the watch steady on my wrist, but not too stiff.
Although I haven’t tried every sailcloth bracelet in the world, I can’t say that they are the best. However, they are definitely of a higher quality than the Christopher Ward C65 Bronze sailcloth strap, which I had to replace quickly because it was fraying and my watch was slipping around my wrist. This is solved by the Artem straps, which have a high-quality backing with just enough friction. Christopher Ward requests PS60 for his OEM sailcloth. These are clearly superior.
Artem claims that there is no break-in period for their strap. I agree. I strapped the Arpiem Tribute to the strap and it instantly felt good - much better than the original leather strap. The Artem buckles were fine but I prefer the originals. I do swapped the tang buckle for a deployant. I prefer the foldover clasp because it protects the strap more.
What other features would you like to see? I would love to see an 18mm option, and more colours. A second reason is that Artem is located in Australia so large orders will incur customs fees, which makes them less competitively priced. I have no complaints. These straps are not cheap eBay ones that come with a markup - they are comparable in quality to straps that would be fitted to Swiss watches of high value, upwards to PS1,000.
There are many options to choose from when it comes to ordering different types and lengths of spring bars
High quality straps, no break-in required
Prices are competitive with OEM options of lower quality
Only black straps available
No 18mm option
UK buyers find the price less appealing due to customs fees
My straps are usually purchased from Watch Gecko. However, I have never had a sailcloth to compare with the Artem. My experience with Christopher Ward's sailcloth-strap, which is the same price, has influenced my decision. The Artem straps have more features. They are more comfortable, feel less stiff and hug your wrist well. They are also very strong and less likely to fray. They are also available in a variety of widths and lengths, making them well worth the investment.
Artem sent me three straps so I'm giving away the ones I haven't worn to viewers of the WRUK Youtube Channel. You can head on over to the channel before July 31st, subscribe and leave a comment on the Artem video. I will use Gleam.io for the drawing and notify the winners by replying to their comments.
